Buffalo CBP Officers Seize $4,700 in Counterfeit Currency

BUFFALO, N.Y. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Peace Bridge seized $4,700 dollars in counterfeit currency.

Yesterday, CBP officers encountered a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old male after he made a wrong turn onto the bridge. The male, claimed to be a citizen of Yemen and a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States. However, he was not in possession of proper identification and was subsequently referred for further inspection.

During the course of the inspection, CBP officers verified the subject was a Lawful Permanent Resident of the U.S. and a citizen of Yemen. Additionally, CBP officers conducted a vehicle search that resulted in the discovery of 47 counterfeit $100 bills stashed in a storage area on the door.

“Our CBP officers encounter a wide variety of criminal activity,” said Buffalo Port Director Jennifer De La O. “In this case, our officers were able to take $4,700 of fake currency out of circulation where it could have done harm to other businesses and individuals financially.”

The seized currency was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations who will lead an investigation into the incident.
