Calais, Maine - U.S. Customs and Border Protection has announced the opening of a new NEXUS lane at the port of entry at International Avenue in Calais, Maine. The NEXUS lane is open to traffic from 7 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.
NEXUS is a joint CBP-Canada Border Services Agency program for frequent travelers, implemented by the American and Canadian governments to enhance border security while simplifying border crossings for pre-approved, low-risk travelers. Launched in 2002, more than 350,000 U.S. and Canadian citizens and residents are currently enrolled in the NEXUS program.
NEXUS members are processed with little or no delay by U.S. and Canadian officials at designated highway lanes and at NEXUS kiosks at Canadian pre-clearance airports. All occupants of a vehicle must have NEXUS cards in order to utilize the designated lane.
The program utilizes Radio Frequency Identification Device technology at land border locations to help automate and speed processing and iris-scan technology at the NEXUS air kiosks. A similar program, Free and Secure Trade, also exists for commercial truck drivers.
NEXUS membership fulfills the travel document requirements of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which requires a passport or other secure travel document for all U.S. and Canadian citizens seeking to enter the U.S.
Eligible applicants must be compliant with customs and immigration requirements and pass a background check by both countries. The final step in the application process is an in-person interview with CBP and CBSA officers. To apply online, click on the travel tab at www.cbp.gov.
