Officers seize Cocaine from False-Sided Suitcase
JAMAICA, N.Y. — On October 19, CBP officers intercepted passenger Mr. Deskean Reid, a Guyanese citizen, arriving from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. During his examination, CBP officers noticed an anomaly in Mr. Reid’s suitcase. Mr. Reid was escorted to a private search room where his suitcase was searched revealing a white powder that tested positive for cocaine.
Mr. Reid was arrested for the importation of a controlled substance and was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The total weight of cocaine seized was approximately 5 lbs. with an estimated street value of $85,000.
“This seizure illustrates CBP’s efforts to refine and enhance the effectiveness of our detention and interdiction capabilities to combat the entry of illegal drugs into the United States,” said, Troy Miller Director, Field Operations in New York for CBP.
Mr. Reid now faces federal narcotics smuggling charges and will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the U.S. Eastern District Court of New York. All defendants are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
