Douglas, Arizona - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and a specially-trained canine recently stopped an attempt by three men to illegal transport more than $50,000 out of the country.
On April 29th at about 11p.m., CBP officers were screening traffic going into Mexico as part of a southbound operation. The officers selected a 2007 Cadillac Escalade for further inspection. The Escalade was being driven by a 19-year-old man accompanied by his 39-year-old father and a 20-year-old friend. All three men were United States citizens and residents of Mesa, Arizona.
With the assistance of a special trained money sniffing dog, CBP officers discovered that the men were attempting to smuggle $51,770 out of the United States by concealing the money in their socks and deep pockets.
CBP officers seized the vehicle and the currency. All three men were turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation and prosecution.
