CBP Officers Intercept a Variety of Illegal Drugs at the Champlain Port of Entry

Champlain, N.Y. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) today announced the seizure of marijuana, MDMA (ecstasy) and steroids from a 36 year old Montreal man. The seizure resulted in the federal arrest of Vladimyr Lafontant, a Haitian citizen from Montreal, Quebec.

On May 14, CBP officers encountered Lafontant as he applied for admission into the United States as the sole operator of his personal vehicle at the Champlain port of entry in Champlain. During the primary inspection of Lafontant, CBP officers noticed a suspicious package partially concealed in the trunk of the vehicle. CBP officers immediately took control of Lafontant and continued with the vehicle inspection in a secure search area. The additional search of the vehicle revealed two more packages secreted behind the lining of the trunk. The three separate packages contained one pound of marijuana, 6,299 tablets of ecstasy, and two vials and 100 tablets of testosterone and anadrol (anabolic steroids), respectively.

Federal prosecution was accepted under 21USC952, importation of controlled substances. Subject Lafontant was arrested by CBP officers and turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

"The discovery by CBP officers of the mixed load of narcotics and steroids is not common. This seizure and federal arrest are the direct result of alert CBP officers conducting a thorough inspection of the subject and the vehicle," said James T. Engleman, CBP director of field operations for the Buffalo field office.
