CBP Officers at the Port of Champlain Discover Illicit Drugs and Money

CHAMPLAIN, N.Y. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Champlain Port of Entry seized 64.2 grams of methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) pills, commonly known as ecstasy, and more than $30,000 in Canadian currency.

Yesterday, CBP officers working at the Champlain Port of Entry encountered Sylvie Marcil, a 51-year-old female citizen of Canada. After the primary inspection, CBP officers referred the Canadian citizen for an additional secondary screening. During the secondary inspection, a CBP canine team alerted for the presence of narcotics in the vehicle and initiated a physical exam. CBP officers then discovered a plastic bag with a large amount of pills that were not in a prescription bottle. Additionally, officers also located $30,876 in Canadian currency. Through investigative steps, officers determined that the pills were MDMA and weighed approximately 64 grams. As a result, CBP seized both the currency and narcotics.

“Our officers’ continue to rise to the challenge and work diligently to enforce the laws of the United States,” said Port Director Steve Bronson. “Their perseverance keeps drugs like these out of our local communities and ensures our residents are safe.”

After CBP processing, the subject and narcotics were turned over to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office in order to face felony narcotics charges of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd Degree
