CBP Officers at the Progreso International Bridge Take Custody of Mexican National Wanted by the State of Texas on an Alleged Charge of Sexual Assault

Progreso, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Progreso International Bridge took custody of a Mexican national extradited to the U.S. by Mexican authorities.

On August 9, 2010, CBP officers working at the Progreso International Bridge took custody of a Mexican national extradited to the U.S. by Mexican authorities. The man was identified as Luis Vera Villagomez, a Mexican citizen, age 41, from Cortazar, Guanajuato, Mexico. A check of a CBP database revealed Vera Villagomez as the subject of an outstanding criminal arrest warrant. The warrant indicated that Vera Villagomez as wanted by the Mercedes, Texas Police Department on a state charge of sexual assault. After his arrest, Vera Villagomez was transferred to the custody of the Mercedes Police Department.

Nancy Becker, CBP Port Director, Progreso said, "This was an excellent coordinated effort by the Mercedes Police Department, CBP and the Government of Mexico that resulted in the extradition and apprehension of this fugitive."
