Niland, Calif. - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector apprehended a convicted sex offender Monday while conducting train check operations at the Highway 111 checkpoint.
The man has a prior conviction for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 and has been previously removed from the United States.
The man, who was later identified as Manuel Enriquez, was one out of five people who were attempting to hide within a train car. Agents determined that all five subjects were illegally present in the U.S. All five illegal aliens were subsequently arrested and transported to the Indio station for processing.
Enriquez will be held at the Imperial County Jail pending prosecution proceedings.
