Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and resident for the last three years, have a valid driver's license, pass a medical examination, and fitness and drug tests. Applicants must also pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination.

Every day, CBP protects the public from dangerous people and materials attempting to cross the border, while enhancing the nation’s global economic competitiveness by enabling legitimate trade and travel at ports of entry. CBP’s primary mission is preventing terrorism and the CBP Officer is a full-time, uniformed federal law enforcement professional who, in addition to its anti-terrorism mission, also enforces customs, immigration, and agricultural laws and regulations, and prevents the illegal trafficking of humans, narcotics and other contraband into the U.S.
Officers serve at 328 international air, land and sea ports of entry in the U.S. and at 15 airport preclearance locations worldwide, including Washington-Dulles International Airport.
CBP Officers are competitively rewarded for their time on the job. In addition to a salary, CBP Officers may be eligible for overtime pay, locality pay, and more.
CBP Officer is a career ladder position with a grade level progression of GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, and GS-12. You will be eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (without re-applying) once you successfully complete one year in each grade level, with supervisor approval. For example, if you start as a GS-5 CBP Officer in December 2018, your advancement ladder might look like this:
- Start as a CBP Officer in December 2018 as a GS-5 and make $40,154 per year
- Be promoted in December 2019 to GS-7 and make $54,845 per year
- Be promoted in December 2020 to GS-9 and make $70,258 per year
- Be promoted in December 2021 to GS-11 and make $84,660 per year
- Be promoted in December 2022 to GS-12 and make $95,437 per year
