Lubec, Maine - Off-duty Customs and Border Protection Officer Loring Munson, who works at the Lubec, Maine, port of entry, saved the life of a drowning man this weekend as the man was being swept away in the Lubec Narrows, a channel in Maine between Lubec and Campobello Island. This small but dangerous inlet is well known for its strong tides.
Munson was enjoying a day off when he encountered a boater who was in distress because his boat had capsized, throwing him in the cold waters of Lubec Narrows. Without hesitation, Munson called the port of entry in Lubec to ask them to notify the Coast Guard.
Realizing that the man needed immediate assistance, Munson and his daughter's boyfriend took a boat out to the distressed man and pulled him to safety. A few minutes later the Coast Guard arrived and towed the three men to shore.
"CBP Officer Munson is a true hero as he risked his life to save another", said Director of Field Operations Kevin Weeks. "CBP officers, both on and off duty, must be prepared to react to any situation, especially if it means saving lives or safeguarding our nation."
