CALEXICO, Calif. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Calexico West port of entry apprehended a fugitive Tuesday wanted for a homicide in Las Vegas.

“I’m glad we could take this fugitive into custody to face the charges levied against him,” said Sergio Beltran, Officer in Charge of the Calexico ports of entry.  “Border security is important to protect our communities locally and throughout the U.S.”

At about 8:45 a.m. on June 9, Luis Angeles Lopez approached CBP officers at the Calexico West port of entry and presented his birth certificate and Nevada driver’s license.

The officer performed a records check and found that Lopez had a no bail felony warrant for homicide in Las Vegas.  CBP officers took Lopez, a 27-year-old U.S. citizen, into custody and turned him over to officers with the Calexico Police Department.

Each year, CBP officers at the border crossings between California and Mexico apprehend approximately 2,000 fugitives with active warrants for their arrest.

Criminal charges are merely allegations.  Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
