LAREDO, TEXAS – In a single event, a human smuggling attempt is foiled, two stolen vehicles are recovered, and a fugitive from justice is arrested at the Interstate Highway 35 (I-35) checkpoint north of Laredo.
The incident occurred during the late evening of October 3, when a pickup pulling a recreational vehicle (RV) trailer approached the checkpoint. During an immigration inspection of the driver and two passengers, a Service canine alerted to the trailer. Agents referred the vehicle to secondary inspection where a non-intrusive scan of the trailer revealed 13 individuals concealed inside.
All of the individuals were determined to be illegally present in the United States from the countries of Mexico and Guatemala. None were wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The individuals along with the driver and passengers were taken into custody pending investigation.
During processing, records check revealed an outstanding warrant of arrest for one of the passengers by the city of Jourdanton, Texas for Interference with a Public Case. Agents contacted Webb County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies who confirmed the warrant and took custody of the individual pending her extradition to Jourdanton.
Investigation further revealed that both the pickup truck and the RV had been reported stolen from San Antonio, Texas. Both vehicles were turned over to WCSO deputies.
This single incident is indicative of the criminal element involved in the smuggling of people into the country for profit. Their lack of regard for the safety of the people they exploit also endangers our agents and our communities.
