Nogales, Ariz. - Nogales Border Patrol agents assigned to the Interstate 19 checkpoint near Amado, Ariz., responded to a request for canine support from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) late Tuesday night. The assist resulted in the discovery of a concealed compartment in a horse trailer containing more than 470 pounds of marijuana.

The Border Patrol canine team performed a cursory inspection of the vehicle and trailer and alerted to possible illicit contraband near the front of the horse trailer. A physical inspection by SCSO and the Border Patrol uncovered a concealed compartment containing several bundles of marijuana.

"This is an excellent example of how 'Operation Stonegarden' partners cooperate to provide additional law enforcement coverage," said Chief Patrol Agent Victor M. Manjarrez, Jr. "State, local and tribal police agencies act as force multipliers, making it difficult for the criminal element to be successful in introducing narcotics to the communities we protect."

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said he recognizes and appreciates the assistance provided by the U.S. Border Patrol to his department. "Strong partnerships yield positive results," he said.

"Operation Stonegarden" is made possible by grants funded by the Department of Homeland Security, and has reinforced Tucson Sector's partnerships with local, state and tribal law enforcement agencies. Twenty-eight agencies currently participate in "Operation Stonegarden".
