BALTIMORE – Great news for job seekers looking for a federal law enforcement career, you have another chance to apply through July to be a Customs and Border Protection officer in Philadelphia or Baltimore.

Previously, this hiring opportunity was to expire June 30.

CBP’s primary mission is to facilitate international trade and travel while keeping terrorists and weapons of terror out of the United States. CBP officers also enforce customs, immigration, and agricultural laws, and prevent the illegal trafficking of humans, narcotics and other contraband into the U.S.

CBP officers serve at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, or at the seaport around Baltimore or Philadelphia.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and resident for the last three years, have a valid driver's license, pass a medical examination, and fitness and drug tests.  Applicants must also pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination.

CBP officer is a career ladder position with a grade level progression of GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, and GS-12. You will be eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (without re-applying) once you successfully complete one year in each grade level, with supervisor approval.

For example if you started as a CBP officer in December 2019 you could:

  • Start as a CBP Officer in December 2019 as a GS-5 and make $41,830 per year
  • Be promoted in December 2020 to GS-7 and make $57,519 per year
  • Be promoted in December 2021 to GS-9 and make $74,222 per year
  • Be promoted in December 2022 to GS-11 and make $94,314 per year
  • Be promoted in December 2023 to GS-12 and make $104,516 per year

Additionally, CBP officers earn locality pay and fully trained officers are eligible for night differential pay, holiday pay and up to $45,000 in overtime pay.
