LAREDO, TEXAS – During the same evening, agents at the Interstate Highway 35 (I-35) checkpoint north of Laredo prevented two attempts of human smuggling via car trunk.

The first incident occurred during the early evening of October 15, when a sedan approached the checkpoint.  A Service canine alerted agents during immigration inspection of the driver and passenger.  Agents discovered three individuals inside the trunk of the vehicle without any Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

The second incident occurred less than an hour and half later when another sedan approached the primary inspection lane of the I-35 checkpoint.  During an inspection of the vehicle, agents discovered two individuals in the trunk without any PPE.

In both incidents, all of the individuals were determined to be illegally present in the United States from the countries of Mexico and Honduras.  They were medically evaluated and did not exhibit any signs of illness.  The individuals along with both drivers and the one front seat passenger, all U.S. citizens, were taken into custody pending investigation.  Border Patrol seized the vehicles.
