San Diego - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro port of entry on Saturday, April 17, assisted a San Diego woman with the birth of her baby.
At approximately 11:08 a.m. a woman who was waiting in line to be inspected, in a Mazda pickup truck, began to go into labor.
Officers immediately escorted the pregnant woman to the secondary examination area where she was attended by CBP officers trained as medical first responders (MFRT's) until paramedics arrived on-site.
Officers aided with the birthing process and delivered a baby boy.
Minutes after the baby was born, paramedics arrived and transported both mother and child to a local hospital for further medical attention.
One of the officers that assisted with the delivery has worked at the port for 18 and a half years and during that time has been involved in at least a "dozen" baby deliveries at the port.
Chris Maston, port director, said, " This incident is an example of how anything can happen at a port of entry and illustrates how port personnel must be prepared to deal with all types of emergencies."
