U.S. Border Patrol Captures Fugitive in Maine

Houlton, Maine - Border Patrol agents from the Houlton, Maine Station captured without incident a fugitive wanted for aggravated assault. Agents released the subject to the custody of the Aroostook County Sherriff's Office for processing.

The subject is wanted in connection with an assault that took place in Littleton, Maine on May 5. A subsequent search that day by law enforcement and a Customs and Border Protection helicopter failed to locate the subject. The arrest was made May 8 after an agent recognized the fugitive during his patrol duties.

The U.S. Border Patrol's primary mission is preventing terrorists and terrorist weapons from illegally entering the United States. Agents also work very close with other law enforcement agencies in the area to reduce crime and improve the quality of life in the communities that we serve.

"When there is a dangerous fugitive in our area, Border Patrol works with local law enforcement to capture the person as quickly as possible," said Chief Patrol Agent Joseph Mellia. "It is up to all law enforcement to work together in protecting the communities we vowed to keep out of harm's way."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
