U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers Arrest Man Wanted for Military Desertion

Alexandria Bay, N.Y. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Field Operations announced the arrest of a United States citizen wanted by the U.S. Army for desertion.

On Aug. 16, CBP officers encountered Paul Hart, a 36-year-old United States citizen from New Bedford, Mass. as he applied for admission into the United Alexandria Bay, N.Y. Port of Entry. A primary name query revealed that Mr. Hart was the subject of an active federal arrest warrant out of Kentucky.

Additional record checks performed by CBP officers during a secondary inspection confirmed that Mr. Hart was in fact the subject of a nation-wide felony warrant issued in July of 2006 by the U.S. Military Police in Ft. Knox, Ky. The warrant charges Mr. Hart with desertion. Mr. Hart advised CBP that he had been living in the Toronto, Ontario area since 2005 where he was seeking refugee status in Canada, but feared his claim would be denied and decided to return to the United States.

CBP officers verified the validity of the warrant and confirmed extradition. Mr. Hart was then arrested and turned over to the custody of the Ft. Drum Military Police pending extradition to Kentucky.
