U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers Seize Nearly $150,000 in Marijuana at Brownsville Port of Entry

Brownsville, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Veterans' International Bridge seized marijuana valued at approximately $146,300 concealed within a Chevrolet Astro Van.

On Wednesday, June 23, at the Veterans' International Bridge, CBP officers encountered a green 1999 Chevrolet Astro Van driven by a 27-year-old female, Mexican citizen and resident of South Padre Island, Texas. At primary, a CBP officer's examination of the Chevrolet resulted in the driver and van being referred to secondary for further inspection. At secondary, CBP officers' examination revealed hidden packages within the Astro van. CBP officers removed two large packages from the gas tank of the vehicle which had a combined total weight of 146 pounds of marijuana.

The marijuana from this seizure has an estimated street value of approximately $146,300. CBP officers turned the driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents for further investigation. CBP officers seized the narcotics and the vehicle.

"This interception is a direct result of the continued effort by our CBP officers on the frontline," said Michael Freeman, CBP Port Director, Brownsville. "I commend our officers for their accomplishments and dedication to the CBP mission."

CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
