Sunday morning, DPS notified Wellton Border Patrol agents of a vehicle driving the wrong way on Interstate 8 near mile marker 58, which is east of the Mohawk Mountains. Agents responding to the area encountered a two-vehicle, head-on collision near mile marker 62 on the interstate’s westbound lanes.

Two Border Patrol agents who are certified EMTs assisted an off-duty EMS worker with providing life-saving first aid prior to the arrival of additional medical services. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was deceased on scene and a Careflight medical helicopter flew one subject to the hospital. Agents remained at the location to assist DPS with providing traffic control.
