U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) embraces the concept of promoting conservation of the earth’s natural resources and managing energy and water use. CBP aims to implement our national security mission while moving toward a more sustainable future by both leading and supporting an array of initiatives, including:
- Climate Change: CBP is working to understand and address current and future climate change impacts by implementing climate adaptation and mitigation measures as well as increase the climate literacy of the CBP workforce.
- Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory and Reduction: CBP is inventorying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and developing a GHG reduction strategy for emission sources such as buildings and vehicles.
- High Performance Sustainable Buildings: CBP is building high performance sustainable buildings that use less energy and water and include renewable materials and energy sources.
- Sustainable Acquisition: CBP promotes sustainable acquisition by purchasing products and services that meet present needs without compromising the needs of future generations.
- Electronic Stewardship: CBP purchases computers, laptops, and cell phones that are manufactured in an environmentally and socially responsible way, use low levels of energy, and can be recycled at the end of their useful life.
- Recycling: CBP promotes recycling at all facilities when possible in order to reduce waste of resources, our use of landfills, and greenhouse gas.
- Water Use Efficiency and Management: CBP is committed to water use efficiency and management in its buildings and operations with the intention to help CBP facility managers and building maintenance staff better understand their roles and responsibilities regarding to the water efficiency and management program.
These initiatives coincide with the requirements in Executive Order 13834, as well as demonstrate compliance with Federal laws such as the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and the Clean Air Act.
