Preventing cold weather injuries is crucial for outdoor workers during the winter months. Cold-related injuries, such as frostbite and hypothermia, can be serious and even life-threatening.
To prevent injuries:
- Stay dry, hydrated and well-fed. Your body needs energy to generate heat.
- Layer up to trap warm air close to your body. Fingers, toes, ears and noses are especially vulnerable.
- Be active but avoid overexertion as sweating can lead to wet clothing.
- Recognize the symptoms of frostbite, hypothermia and other cold-related injuries. Frostbite symptoms include cold skin and a prickling feeling, followed by numbness and inflamed or discolored skin. As it worsens, skin may become hard or waxy looking.
- Monitor weather conditions and be aware of wind chill factors, which can make the cold feel even more severe.
In case of an emergency, seek medical help immediately. Cold weather injuries are preventable with proper preparation and awareness.
Please stay safe this cold weather season.
