CBP’s workforce is full of incredibly dedicated, talented people. So when they are recognized for their abilities and for their commitment to our mission, I take special pride in sharing that good news.
The Single Window Team, led by two of CBP’s top leadership – Executive Assistant Commissioner Brenda Smith of CBP’s Office of Trade and Assistant Commissioner Phillip Landfried of CBP’s Office of Information Technology – are being recognized as finalists for the prestigious Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal, or “SAMMIE.”
Competition for the SAMMIES is fierce; this year, more than 430 nominations were submitted for consideration, and there are now just 26 Service to America Medal finalists. The Medals, awarded by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service, are the premier awards dedicated to honoring America’s best in government. The finalists will be honored May 9 on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., as part of Public Service Recognition Week.
EAC Smith and AC Landfried are being recognized for their ACE program team’s tremendous accomplishments in establishing the Automated Commercial Environment, or ACE, as the “Single Window” – an electronic system that helps businesses fulfill government import and export requirements by transmitting a streamlined set of data.
The completion of the “Single Window” in December 2016 has resulted in the elimination of more than 250 paper forms. It has helped CBP implement a single system through which trade-related data is submitted and processed. This translates to greater predictability and transparency to the federal government and U.S. businesses – and it saves government and businesses time and money.
ACE has been truly transformative, helping CBP achieve its mission to facilitate lawful trade. It has been one of the most complex IT projects ever undertaken by the federal government, and it would not have been possible without our strong partnerships and collaboration with industry and partner government agencies (PGAs). Accordingly, I especially want to recognize the efforts of Timothy E. Skud, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Tax, Trade, and Tariff Policy for the U.S. Department of Treasury. Deputy Assistant Secretary Skud was instrumental in the integration with our PGAs.
Hundreds of individuals have worked diligently and are to be commended for their efforts to make the Single Window a success across government and industry.
Congratulations to EAC Smith and AC Landfried and the Single Window team for being selected as finalists for a SAMMIE.
