LAREDO, Texas – Agents operating the Border Patrol Checkpoint on Interstate Highway (IH) 35 north of Laredo, Texas uncovered a smuggling attempt when they found 47 illegal aliens concealed in a refrigerated trailer.
On September 9, Border Patrol agents encountered a 2017 white Freightliner tractor truck pulling a trailer, occupied by a male driver and female passenger at the primary inspection lane. The driver was directed to the secondary inspection area after a service canine alerted to the tractor and trailer. At this time, the driver sped off and agents had to pursue the vehicle until they were able to get the driver to stop at the 30-mile marker of IH 35. Upon performing an inspection of the trailer, agents encountered a total of 47 illegal aliens inside the locked trailer.
The driver and passenger, both United States citizens, along with the illegal aliens were placed under arrest. After interviewing the subjects, agents determined they were citizens from the countries of Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Peru. All of the individuals were evaluated and did not require medical attention. The vehicle was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol and the case was referred to Homeland Security Investigations.
