EDINBURG, Texas – On Tuesday, Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Sector Border Patrol agents seized more than $270K worth of narcotics.

Yesterday afternoon, Brownsville agents received information of several drug smugglers running north towards a nearby Dollar General store. As agents responded, further information received indicated that the smugglers had placed the suspected drug bundles in the bed of a parked Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. When the agents arrived, they observed the United States citizen driver attempting to leave, but he was quickly detained and arrested without incident. A search of the truck led to the discovery and seizure of 145 pounds of marijuana worth $116K.

Additionally, agents assigned to the Border Patrol checkpoints seized 240 Xanax pills, 1500 Tramadol pills, and nearly five pounds of cocaine in two separate incidents. The cocaine has an estimated value of more than $154K.

The narcotics seized by Border Patrol were turned over to investigating agencies, and all subjects were processed accordingly.

The Rio Grande Valley Sector currently has multiple campaigns focused on rescues and danger awareness, such as “Operation Big Rig” and “No Se Arriesgue” to combat smuggling and ultimately save lives. Call 911 to report suspicious activity; “They’re humans, not cargo!”

Even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human smugglers continue to try these brazen attempts with zero regard for the lives they endanger nor to the health of the citizens of our great nation.  The U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector will continue to safeguard the nation and community against these criminal elements.
