EDINBURG, Texas – On Sunday, Border Patrol agents seized nearly 500 pounds of marijuana.

Sunday morning, Weslaco agents working near Donna, Texas, responded to a report of a suspicious red four-door sedan traveling north of the Rio Grande. As agents arrived, they observed a Dodge Charger on the river levee near Valley View Road.  As the agents approached, the driver and passenger abandoned the vehicle and jumped into the nearby brush. Agents arrested both men after agents discovered more than 141 pounds of marijuana, worth more than $112K, inside the sedan.

That same evening, Falfurrias agents working at the checkpoint referred a black four-door sedan for secondary inspection. At secondary, a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 87 pounds of marijuana in a false compartment. Agents arrested the driver and passenger and escorted them to the station for processing. The drugs are worth more than $69K. Border Patrol turned the drugs and subjects over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

A few hours later, agents in Rio Grande City received and responded to a reported drug smuggling attempt. As the agents arrived, they witnessed several drug smugglers abandon the drugs and run back towards the river. Agents secured over 234 pounds of marijuana worth more than $187K. All the smugglers swam back to Mexico.

Border Patrol processed the subjects and cases accordingly.

The public is encouraged to take a stand against crime in their communities and report suspicious activity at 800-863-9382.

Even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human smugglers continue to try these brazen attempts with zero regard for the lives they endanger nor to the health of the citizens of our great nation.  The U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector will continue to safeguard the nation and community against these criminal elements.
