PHILADELPHIA – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has great news for people seeking a federal law enforcement career in the Philadelphia area – CBP is hiring to fill positions here starting June 1.
A CBP officer is a full-time, uniformed, federal law enforcement professional who helps facilitate lawful international trade and travel at airport and seaport Ports of Entry, and at land border crossings. In addition to CBP’s anti-terrorism mission, CBP officers enforce customs, immigration, and agricultural laws, and prevent the illegal trafficking of humans, narcotics and other contraband into the United States.

“Customs and Border Protection hiring officers in Philadelphia is very exciting news for us and for those in the Mid-Atlantic area interested in a challenging and rewarding federal law enforcement career,” said Casey Durst, CBP’s Director of Field Operations in Baltimore. “The Greater Philadelphia area is home to one of our nation’s busiest seaports for international commerce and top airports for international travel, and we welcome more officers to help us execute the mission of CBP.”
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and resident for the last three years, have a valid driver's license, pass a medical examination, and fitness and drug tests. Applicants must also pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination.
Upon successful graduation from CBP’s Field Operations Academy, officers may be assigned to passenger, trade or tactical operations teams at Philadelphia International Airport, or to one of several seaport inspection facilities.
CBP officer is a career ladder position with a grade level progression of GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, and GS-12. You will be eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (without re-applying) once you successfully complete one year in each grade level, with supervisor approval.
For example if you started as a CBP officer in December 2019 you could:
- Start as a CBP Officer in December 2019 as a GS-5 and make $41,830 per year
- Be promoted in December 2020 to GS-7 and make $57,519 per year
- Be promoted in December 2021 to GS-9 and make $74,222 per year
- Be promoted in December 2022 to GS-11 and make $94,314 per year
- Be promoted in December 2023 to GS-12 and make $104,516 per year
Additionally, CBP officers earn locality pay and fully trained officers are eligible for night differential pay, holiday pay and up to $45,000 in overtime pay.
