CBP Officers at Brownsville Bridges Seize Marijuana, Cocaine During Busy Weekend

Brownsville, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Brownsville/Matamoros and Veteran's International Bridges seized 116.3 pounds of marijuana and 16 pounds of cocaine in two separate and unrelated drug seizures. The estimated street value of the marijuana is $93,086, while the value of the cocaine is $512,617.

CBP officers working at the bridge Sunday came in contact with a northbound 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck. After the initial primary inspection, a CBP officer referred the vehicle to secondary for further inspection. During a secondary inspection, CBP officers seized 21 packages, totaling 104.7 pounds of marijuana that were found hidden in the truck's gas tank. The value of the drug is estimated at $83,774.

Later in the day, CBP officers working at Veteran's International Bridge came in contact with a northbound 2006 Chevy 1500 pickup truck. After a primary examination, the vehicle was referred to secondary for further inspection. In secondary, officers seized 25 marijuana packages, totaling 11.6 pounds and 12 cocaine packages totaling 16 pounds. The estimated street value of the marijuana is $9,312, while the cocaine is valued at $512,617. In this seizure, the drugs were found hidden in the bed of the pickup truck. CBP officers seized the marijuana, cocaine and the two pickup trucks.

These two separate matters were referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for further investigation.

Michael T. Freeman, CBP Port Director Brownsville said, "Our frontline officers continue to do great enforcement work and these two drug seizures are two examples of the work our officers do daily."

CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
