Progreso, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Progreso International Bridge assisted in the delivery of a baby girl early Sunday morning, rendering timely assistance to a traveler with a medical emergency while still maintaining the security of our border.
On January 31, at approximately 9:05 a.m., a northbound pick-up truck arrived at CBP primary. At arrival, the now proud father alerted CBP officers that his spouse was experiencing labor pains. Within seconds, CBP officers summoned an ambulance and referred the vehicle and soon-to-be parents to secondary.
About one minute later, at approximately 9:06 a.m., the woman's husband advised CBP officers that his wife was now experiencing severe labor pains. At this point, a CBP supervisor and a CBP officer assumed first responder duties and took control of the situation with the U.S. citizen woman. CBP officers were able to lay the woman on the truck seat and prepared her to give birth.
Within a few minutes, both the supervisor and the officer advised CBP personnel that a baby girl had been delivered. After the birth, CBP officers remained at the woman and baby's side waiting for an ambulance to arrive. At 9:18 a.m., a medical emergency unit arrived at the port of entry and took custody of the baby girl and mother. Later in the day, CBP officers were contacted by a local hospital and were advised that the mother and baby girl were in good health.
"Wow, it happened so fast. We acted and were able to assist in the birth of this baby girl. It is something that I will never forget," the CBP supervisor said.
"This is a first one for me. I never thought that while at work that I would be called upon to deliver a baby," the CBP officer said. "I am glad I did and am happy to know that the baby and parents are doing fine."
For the Port of Progreso, this is the first recorded birth of a baby girl in the secondary area delivered by CBP officers.
Nancy F. Becker, acting port director, Progreso said, "Our actions speak for themselves. It is important to let the public know that our mission also calls for CBP to provide for the safety, care and welfare of the traveling public."
