Del Rio Sector Hosts 2018 Border Patrol Explorer Academy

25 Explorers from Del Rio, Eagle Pass Graduate

DEL RIO, Texas – Del Rio Sector Border Patrol Headquarters recently hosted the 2018 Border Patrol Explorer Academy. Twenty-five Explorers graduated the academy earning them a place as team members at their respective post.

“The Border Patrol Explorer Program benefits our communities by positively shaping and impacting our local youth,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Felix Chavez. “On behalf the men and women of Del Rio Sector, I congratulate the Explorer graduate class of 2018 for completing this portion of their training.”

On Aug. 10, Explorer trainees graduated the academy after 40 hours of instruction in physical fitness, first aid, arrest techniques, and scenario-based law enforcement training. Explorer posts 920 from Del Rio Station, 925 from Eagle Pass South Station, and 921 from Eagle Pass Station were represented.

Top performing Explorer trainees were recognized at last week’s graduation ceremony. Francisco Avendaño from Del Rio Post 921 received the leadership award.  Top male and female performers in physical training were Mario Adan Carrillo and Maryfer Rodriguez, respectively, both from Eagle Pass South Post 925.  Top marksmanship went to Gabriela Mandujano-Sanchez, also from Eagle Pass South Post 925. The Eagle Pass South Station Post 925 earned Top Overall honors.

The Del Rio Sector Explorer program offers 14- to 18-year-olds a safe and structured environment where they receive training from Border Patrol agent advisors and provides a unique opportunity for students considering a career in law enforcement. Law Enforcement Exploring emphasizes the importance of scholastic excellence, time-management and responsibility.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
