Nogales, Ariz. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped a drug smuggling attempt when they seized nearly 48 pounds of marijuana concealed in the gas tank of a vehicle.
On February 1 at about 2:30 p.m. CBP officers at the Nogales port of entry were screening travelers when they came in contact with a 27-year-old man driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The man was identified as a Mexican national and resident of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
The CBP officers selected the vehicle for inspection. Utilizing high-tech equipment, CBP officers discovered that the gas tank of the vehicle contained packages of marijuana. Nearly 48 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value $106,000 were removed from the gas tank.
CBP Officers seized the vehicle and marijuana. The man was turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation and prosecution.
