YUMA, Ariz. – A Yuma Station Border Patrol agent was assaulted by an illegal alien Sunday morning, just 10 hours before agents with the Yuma Sector Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue Team undertook a humanitarian mission to rescue two illegal aliens who were stranded in the desert.
On Sunday morning, three subjects made an illegal entry into the United States near Andrade, California. Agents apprehended one of the illegal aliens in the group without incident. As they attempted to apprehend the second subject, the illegal alien punched an agent multiple times and attempted to evade arrest by fleeing.
Agents searched the area and apprehended the assaultive subject, an 18-year-old male from Honduras. The third subject absconded back into Mexico.
The agent did not require medical attention.
On Monday morning, the Wellton Border Patrol Station received a 911 call from a migrant and his traveling companion in distress. The two illegally entered the United States two days before and had been wandering through the desert near Tacna. The BORSTAR team was notified and deployed to the area.
The men, both Mexican nationals, appeared to be in good health and declined further medical assistance. They were transported to the Wellton Station where they were processed for immigration violations, where all detainees received access to food, water, hygiene items, and further assistance if needed.
Emergency calls are common, as migrants experience a lack of water and are lost in the desert. Yuma Sector has 26 rescue beacons located throughout some of the most desolate areas, and illegal aliens are encouraged to use them, or call 911 for help.
These events highlight how Border Patrol agents perform a diverse border security mission, up to and including being assaulted one minute, then performing life-saving humanitarian aid the next.
All of the illegal aliens will be processed for immigration violations following an initial evaluation to ensure their health and safety.
