Release Date
Mon, 03/30/2020

On Saturday, March 28 at approximately 10:39 p.m. MST, a black Chevrolet Avalanche fled from the primary inspection area of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) U.S. Border Patrol Immigration Checkpoint at Interstate 8 (I-8) and continued eastbound on I-8 between Yuma and Wellton, Arizona. U.S. Border Patrol agents immediately began to pursue the vehicle. The pursuit ended when the fleeing driver lost control and the vehicle rolled over. The U.S. Border Patrol agents immediately called for Emergency Medical Services and performed First Aid on both occupants of the vehicle.  Both occupants of the vehicle ultimately succumbed to their injuries.

CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating this unfortunate incident in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
