ALAMOGORDO, N.M. – On August 18, 2021, at approximately 8:17 p.m. MDT, a Border Patrol Agent (BPA) assigned to the Alamogordo, N.M., U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) Station and assigned to the Highway 70 checkpoint observed a suspicious vehicle, a blue Dodge Durango, near the checkpoint. In effort to investigate a suspected smuggling scheme, Alamogordo BPAs attempted to conduct an immigration vehicle stop. The driver of the vehicle failed to yield and proceeded to the City of Alamogordo towards the main gate of Holloman Air Force Base. Military personnel at Holloman Air Force Base perceiving a threat to their base, activated the vehicle barrier at the entrance of the base, which immediately stopped the suspect vehicle. The driver of the Dodge Durango slammed into the barrier subsequently causing a multi-vehicle accident as the Border Patrol vehicle rear ended the Dodge Durango.
Holloman Air Force Base personnel, New Mexico State Police, Otero County Sheriff’s Office, and other BPAs quickly responded to the scene and activated emergency medical services (EMS) to render aid. The driver, five passengers and the Border Patrol Agent injured in the vehicle accident were transported to Gerald Champion Medical Hospital to be treated for injuries.
This is a multi-agency response and is currently under investigation. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
