Aviation Enforcement Agent Esteban G. Peña became ill after returning from a temporary duty assignment in Jacksonville, Florida and was subsequently admitted to the hospital. During his stay in the hospital, he suffered a seizure and was placed on life support. Agent Peña never regained consciousness and succumbed to his illness on April 15, 2023. He was diagnosed with streptococcal meningitis, which medical personnel determined he contracted during his temporary duty assignment in Jacksonville.
Agent Peña began his career with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in June 2016. He was last assigned to the National Air Security Operations Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Agent Peña was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served twenty years as a P-3 Flight Engineer. Agent Peña was survived by his wife and sister.
