U.S. Customs Inspector John Stout was fatally shot by pirates on January 20, 1814 near Lafitte, Barataria, Louisiana. Inspector Stout was 33 years old and had joined Customs in 1813. He was stationed at the port of entry New Orleans, Louisiana.
