U.S. Border Patrol Inspector Orin F. Hush was assigned to the 11th District Patrol Division in Marine City, Michigan. Patrol Inspector Hush was shot and killed while conducting a burglary stakeout. He agreed to conduct surveillance in the home of a local constable, who had recently been burglarized. On January 31, 1927, the constable came home while Patrol Inspector Hush was working his rotation inside. Patrol Inspector Hush believed it was a burglar entering the home. In the darkness, as Patrol Inspector Hush ordered him to put his hands up, the constable mistook him as the burglar and opened fire, fatally wounding Patrol Inspector Hush. The constable was later cleared of any misconduct.
Patrol Inspector Hush joined the U.S. Border Patrol in 1925 as one of the earliest members of the “Patrol”. He also honorably served his country during WWI. Patrol Inspector Hush was survived by his wife.
