Thanksgiving Safety Tips

For many of us, Thanksgiving is one of the most important days of the year. It has family and friends, good food, and football.

Here are a few tips to keep you, your guests, and your home safe:

  • Establish a kid free zone. Establish a kid free zone that sets boundaries around cooking and preparation areas. This keeps kids safe and your dinner preparations running smoothly.

  • Keep someone in the kitchen at all times when cooking. To avoid catastrophes, keep someone in the kitchen at all times until the cooking is done, the ovens and stove tops are off, and the food is on the table.

  • Make sure all smoke detectors are working. Smoke detectors are life savers, so check on them prior to the big day and replace the batteries as needed.

  • Deep fry safely. Deep-frying continues to be a leading cause of fires and injuries on Thanksgiving. Make sure you’re doing it outside and an appropriate distance from your home. Remember that hot oil and water don’t mix. The turkey must be completely defrosted and dry before dropping it into the hot oil. Thinking ahead and reading your user’s manual will keep your experience safe and delicious.

  • Clean as you go. A messy or cluttered kitchen can be a dangerous kitchen. Keep counters and floors clear of debris.

  • Keep candles to a minimum. Keep candles to a minimum and make sure they are put in safe locations.

  • Use hot pads and oven mitts. Use large oven mitts to help avoid being burned. Remember, a dish towel is not a suitable hot pad. Use heavy, non-combustible hot pads to avoid any potential safety hazards.

  • Monitor alcohol intake. Alcohol can slow your reaction times down and possibly create hazards for you and your loved ones. Always have a designated driver to get you home safely.
