DETROIT— A U.S. Border Patrol agent rescued a man contemplating suicide from the MacArthur Bridge in Detroit on Sunday evening.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, a Border Patrol agent on patrol near downtown Detroit heard radio traffic from Detroit Police Department of a possible suicidal subject on the MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle State Park.

Once on scene the Agent observed a subject against the pedestrian guardrail that runs along the outside of the bridge. Two Michigan State Police troopers were actively attempting to talk the subject away from the rail. During the conversation, the MSP troopers successfully distracted the subject, which allowed the Border Patrol agent to quickly approach and safely tackle the subject to the ground. Once safely away from the railing, the subject was secured and escorted to a nearby ambulance for examination.

“My hat goes off to Border Patrol Agent Humerez, who risked his life last night to save another life,” said Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison. “This is his second rescue of a suicidal subject from the MacArthur Bridge and he should be commended.”

In addition, a vessel and crew from the Detroit Station patrolling the Detroit River provided safety coverage from the waterway.
