CBP Officers Nab Man Wanted on Sexual Offense Charges

COLUMBUS, N.M. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations officers working at the Columbus port of entry arrested a man Thursday who was being sought for sexual offense against a child/fondling charges in Otero County.

“CBP’s primary mission is homeland security. The inspections we perform to support that effort will often help us locate people who are being sought by law enforcement,” said Steve Carman, acting CBP Columbus Port Director.

CBP officers made the apprehension shortly after 8 a.m. when 25-year-old Angel Jesus Esquivel entered the port from Mexico driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. CBP officers queried his documents during their inspection and received an alert for an active warrant.

CBP officers took custody of the man and then confirmed the warrant with Otero County officials. Esquivel was turned over to Luna County Sheriff’s deputies.

While anti-terrorism is the primary mission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the inspection process at the ports of entry associated with this mission results in impressive numbers of enforcement actions in all categories.
