CINCINNATI— U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations officers in Cincinnati have distinguished two cocaine cigar smuggling attempts at a local express consignment facility.

The cocaine invoiced as “cigars” was seized in two separate international mail shipments in late October. The first shipment of over 18lbs was intercepted by CBP on October 18, in a package destined for the Bronx New York from the Dominican Republic. The second smuggling attempt occurred on October 20, when Officers inspected a package originating from the Dominican Republic destined to Irvington New Jersey, which contained more than five pounds of cocaine hidden in cigars.

“The dedication and vigilance of our Officers at our express consignment facilities continues to prevent a substantial amount of drugs from reaching their destination,” said Port Director Richard Gillespie. “These two seizures are an excellent example of what U.S. Customs and Border Protection does each and every day.”

CBP officers, stationed at express consignment facilities throughout the United States, examine and process all parcels arriving from or transiting through foreign points of origin. Drugs such as heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, khat, methamphetamine as well as counterfeit checks and fake merchandise are routinely discovered and seized by CBP officers at facilities. At this time, no arrests were made regarding this seizure and the investigation continues.
