BURKE, N.Y. – On April 22, 2021, the U.S. Border Patrol Swanton Sector presented both New York State Police and the Franklin County, N.Y., District Attorney’s Office disbursement checks for $106,512.80.
On March 23, 2020, Swanton Sector Border Patrol agents received information about a suspicious vehicle involved in illicit cross-border smuggling. The vehicle was located, and a traffic stop was conducted by the New York State Police near Chateauguay. Following the traffic stop, a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of $267,162.00 in United States currency. The driver denied ownership and abandoned all claims to the currency.
Due to the abandonment, Swanton Sector Border Patrol initiated an asset sharing case with the U.S. Treasury Forfeiture Fund on behalf of the N.Y. State Police. On March 29, 2021, Swanton Border Patrol was notified that most of the currency was approved to be awarded to N.Y. State Police and the Franklin County, N.Y. District Attorney’s Office. Each agency received $106,512.80.
In a ceremony on April 22, Acting Patrol Agent in Charge John Brown of the Burke, N.Y. Border Patrol Station presented checks to both NYSP Captain Brent Davison and District Attorney Craig Carriero.
“This is yet another great example of outstanding cooperation between the State of New York law enforcement and the U.S. Border Patrol in keeping our communities safe,” said Brown.
