SALTON CITY, Calif. -- El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested two United States citizens accused of smuggling fentanyl through an immigration checkpoint early Friday morning.
A 32-year-old male and a 32-year-old female were found with 1.28 pounds of fentanyl valued at $24,672 concealed in their vehicle.
The pair were encountered just after midnight when they approached the Highway 86 checkpoint in a silver Infinity M35. The agent checking vehicles in the lanes referred their car aside for further investigation.
A Border Patrol K-9 detection team alerted to the rear of the vehicle. Agents proceeded to inspect the trunk compartment of the vehicle and discovered two cylindrical shaped, cellophane wrapped bundles containing pills, hidden inside a speaker box. The contents inside the bundles tested positive for fentanyl.
The driver, passenger, vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
