On April 24, 1944, Patrol Inspector Garvis F. Harrell was on patrol near Rangerville, Texas. Patrol Inspector Harrell picked up the foot sign of a suspected illegal migrant and began to track the trail. While on foot, he became exhausted and collapsed. He was later found and taken to the hospital in Harlingen, Texas, where he was pronounced dead due to heart failure from overexertion.
Patrol Inspector Harrell was survived by his mother and father.
