On October 1, 1922, Mounted Customs Inspector Jot Gunter Jones was investigating a group of men know to be Mexican liquor smugglers. He approached the men at an outdoor dance hall in Mission, Texas. One of the men attacked Jones from behind, stole his gun, and killed him.
Customs Inspector Jones entered on duty with the Customs Service on February 16, 1922. He was survived by his father, stepmother, and two daughters.
