On July 31, 1916, Mounted Customs Inspector Robert L. Wood, was with another Mounted Inspector and several U.S. Army soldiers, when they encountered a group of Mexican bandits. The bandits had crossed the Rio Grande River, to escape pursuing revolutionary Carrancistas, and were hiding in a house approximately 5 miles south of Fort Hancock, Texas. Inspector Wood and his companions had surrounded the house when the bandits opened fire, killing Inspector Wood and a U.S. Army Private.
Customs Inspector Wood was survived by his mother, father, and several siblings.
