San Diego County Border Barrier Projects (March 2020)

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is constructing new border barrier projects in eastern San Diego County, California, within the U.S. Border Patrol San Diego Sector.

In eastern San Diego County, CBP will be replacing approximately 14 miles of existing primary pedestrian barrier with new steel bollard fencing and constructing approximately five (5) miles of new steel bollard fencing.  The existing pedestrian barrier no longer meets the U.S. Border Patrol’s operational needs.

The projects also include the installation of a linear ground detection system, road construction or refurbishment, and the installation of lighting, which will be supported by grid power and include embedded cameras. The design of the new steel bollard fencing includes 30-foot steel bollards that are approximately 6” x 6” in diameter.

From March to May 2020, CBP sought public input on potential impacts to the environment, culture, and commerce, including potential socioeconomic impacts, and quality of life. The comment period closed May 15, 2020. Substantive comments received will be used to inform the environmental review of the projects.
