Cold Stress Safety Tips

During cold weather, outdoor work can be a challenge, especially during extreme cold. Many CBP employees and their families work and train in environments that increase their risk for cold-related illnesses. Cold stress is a condition that occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, resulting in a drop in core body temperature.

Symptoms of Cold Stress

  • Shivering, which may stop as the condition worsens
  • Confusion, disorientation, or impaired mental function
  • Slurred speech or loss of coordination
  • Drowsiness, exhaustion, or fatigue
  • Reduced breathing and/or heart rate

Cold Stress Safety Tips

  • Monitor your physical condition and that of your coworkers
  • Take regular breaks in warm, dry areas
  • Dress properly for the cold
  • Stay dry in the cold because moisture or dampness will enhance cold stress
  • Keep extra clothing handy in case you get wet and need to change
  • Drink warm sweetened fluids
  • Avoid touching cold metal or wet surfaces with bare skin
  • Use safe work practices and plan ahead for cold weather emergencies

Please stay safe this cold weather season!
