CBP’s bill form includes data matrix coding. This coding captures the most critical elements of the bill including amounts owed (total amount as well as the amounts associated with each type of charge such as duty, merchandise processing fee etc.), billed party name and address, bill date, entry date, and port of entry. With the use of appropriate software, data matrix coding allows the Trade Community to immediately scan bill information directly into the company’s computer and accounting systems. The ability to quickly and easily convert ‘paper’ bill data to an electronic record will reduce administrative / transaction costs, reduce clerical errors, and facilitate payment processing. Bill information will be easier than ever to share, as freely-available apps will allow immediate sharing of bill data via email from a handheld device.
